General Summary:

An individual with extensive experience setting up and operating Manual and CNC mills, lathes, grinders, drills, etc.  An individual with vast experience operating CAD systems proficiently, who has experience using calipers, micrometers, comparators, or other such required tools for this position.

Principal Duties and Accountabilities (Essential Functions)

  • Must be at work on time everyday, unless excused

  • Must know how to program CNC machines manually and with the aid of CAD/CAM software

  • Must know how to proficiently operate manual and CNC lathes, mills, grinders, drills, saws, etc.

  • Must be able to take a complex job from the blueprint stage to completion without assistance in a timely, efficient manner

  • Must understand how to read and produce high quality parts following blueprints

  • Must be able to create blueprints as needed

  • Must understand the tool and die making process

  • Must be able to do engineering as needed for projects

  • Must know how to do setups on mills and lathes

  • Must know how to change tools and offsets on CNC equipment

  • Must know how to do program adjustments

  • Must have a good knowledge of feeds and speeds in various materials

  • Must be able to check parts and tooling dimensionally using the comparator, micrometers, calipers, etc.

  • Must requisition necessary tooling and supplies in a timely fashion

  • Must be self-motivated and able to work with no supervision and fill in for the Machine Shop Supervisor in his or her absence

  • Must be willing to learn and accept new responsibilities

  • Must be careful, alert, work safely and keep a clean work area

  • Must wear safety glasses at all times while in shop area

  • Shift work may be required as needed or on a permanent basis (Monday – Thursday 4:00 pm – 2:30 am)

  • Must be willing to work overtime when necessary

Education, Skills, and Experience

To perform this successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Associates degree in Machine Tool Technology and/or at least six years job shop type machining experience

  • Must be teachable

  • Punctuality and reliability is a must

  • Must have good math skills, i.e. addition, subtraction, and division

  • Good writing and reading skills

  • Must be able to listen and follow instructions from management and others

  • Must be able to record necessary paperwork legibly and accurately

  • Ability to speak, read and write in the English language sufficient enough to perform the following:
    • Communicate effectively with other team members and supervision
    • Read and comprehend process instructions
    • Record pertinent process information as required

Personal Tool Requirements

Including but not limited to. These tools must be calibrated and kept in good working order.

  • 0-3” micrometers (.0001 increments) and 0-6” caliper (.001 increments)

  • Test dial indicator (.0001 increments)

  • Travel dial indicator

  • Magnetic base-dovetail holder

  • Edge finder

  • 0-3” depth micrometers

  • Any other tools needed on a regular basis for machining

  • These tools must be checked and calibrated periodically and kept in good working order

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather and underground contained conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but is often loud in specified areas.  Hearing and eye protection is provided. 

 

Safety Shoes meeting OSHA/ANSI Z-41 specifications are required for anyone working in the production department. Anyone working on the ammunition loading equipment or working in the Ballistic Lab are also required to have electrostatic dissipative (ESD) shoes.

  • Must be able to bend and lift at least 40 pounds

  • Good hearing and listening habits to determine abnormal machines noises

  • Good visual skills to determine part defects and flaws

  • Good hygiene and grooming habits (no jewelry is permitted), long hair must be pulled back, no loose clothing or exposed midriffs, closed toed shoes required

  • Position requires a great deal of movement, including bending and climbing
