Huntress Spotlight
Shari Hunter

I was born into a family of second- and third-generation Montanans, and raised in the “Big Sky” state. Hunting, fishing and all forms of outdoor recreation are essential to the Montana lifestyle.

My father has always been an avid outdoorsman, and as the oldest of three girls I was introduced to the outdoors almost literally from day one. As a youngster I went along on scores of fishing trips. Later, I accompanied my father and uncles on many hunting trips. I fondly remember summer pack trips into the Bob Marshall Wilderness.

By age 14, I’d been exposed to a number of different big-game rifles. It was eventually decided my rifle would be a .257 Roberts. I still have and use this rifle, which I now load with Barnes 100-grain Triple-Shock bullets. With my father, my uncles and my brother-and my faithful Roberts-we managed to put a number of deer and elk in the freezer.

Fast forward a few years. As I’d been raised in these traditions, it was natural to gravitate towards someone else who enjoyed these same things. Enter my fiancé. With him came new and increased hunting opportunities, including a memorable trip to Namibia.

For that trip-and for hunting elk in Montana-I acquired a .30-06. After hundreds of rounds of off hand practice, I was ready for Africa. We had a wonderful trip hunting plains game, and we’re already planning to return.

Back in Montana, I’m continuing to hunt deer, fish for trout, and make plans for more great trips in the future.
