Jo Ann Blauwkamp didn’t know what hunting was all about until 1986. That’s when she was persuaded to at least give it a try. The very first animal she hunted was a whitetail buck that went straight down at the shot. Now she was hooked.
She had her own rifle built for her, complete with shortened stock and a muzzle brake. The very next summer she went to Africa for the first time. There, she took zebra, impala and nyala. The next summer she went back again and took several more plains game trophies. That fall she shot a fallow deer.
During the next 20 years, she has returned to Africa 14 more times. Her rifle, by the way, is a Howa 7mm Rem Magnum with a fixed-power 6X Leupold scope. Jo Ann has shot this rifle so much, both hunting and on the range, that it had to be rebarreled last year.
She used standard 175-grain soft point bullets for many years, but is now a 160-grain Barnes TSX fan all the way.
She and her husband Terry are so dedicated to African hunting they now travel around the US during the off season, visiting various hunting conventions and SCI chapter functions, presenting seminars and helping folks go to Africa the first time.
She is invaluable at these seminars, as the guys want to talk about guns and trophies, but the wives want to talk “girl talk,” with questions like, “do the safari camps have bathrooms, lights, and mirrors?”
Her addiction to African hunting is so firm that within two weeks of coming home from a hunt, she is packed and ready to go again (just in case an offer comes along she can’t refuse).
