Huntress Spotlight
Jessica Zimmerman Terry

From the day I was born, I was destined to become a hunter. My mother’s maiden name is “Hunting,” and to say my father likes to hunt is the understatement of the millennium. I grew up in Lehi, Utah and have hunted mule deer and elk ever since I could buy a license. I have also hunted black bear with my father, and took a beautiful bear in 2004.

In 2005, my brother bid on a hunt at the local FNAWS banquet. It was a plains game hunt in South Africa with Dumukwa Safari’s. At first, the trip to Africa was to include only my father and brother, but the number grew to five hunters as my sister and I, along with a family friend, signed on for the grand adventure.

I was fortunate enough to take seven awesome animals—kudu, gemsbok, zebra, impala, bushbuck, blesbok and a wart hog. All the animals were taken with a 180-grain Barnes MRX bullet fired from my .300 WSM Model 70 Winchester.

Each kill was an adventure all by itself. African game animals are tough and challenging to hunt. I was captivated by the beauty and diversity of the African antelope. The white face of the gemsbok, with its beautiful black mask and long spear-like horns, made him one of my most highly sought- after trophies.

With only two days left to hunt, I found myself still lacking the gemsbok bull that I’d wanted so badly. As we were driving in the truck that morning, the PH hunting with my father called us on the radio. He said they had seen some gemsbok bulls headed our way. I was about to get my chance at a gemsbok bull!

We moved quickly to the area where we thought the bulls would come into view. Crashing out of the brush came two small gemsbok bulls, followed by a blue wildebeest. My heart sank. These small bulls were not what I had come to Africa for. A few moments later, a big, beautiful gemsbok bull came bursting from the same spot where the smaller bulls and the wildebeest had emerged. He froze dead in his tracks, startled that we were there. It didn’t take me long to squeeze the trigger, sending my 180-grain MRX bullet into the bull’s vitals.
I could not have had a better trip! My PH loved the Barnes MRX bullets so much he made me leave him my Barnes-X hat. I’ll be dropping in soon to pick up another one!
