In 2007 my daughter drew an Arizona Desert Bighorn Sheep tag. The hunting area was in condor country, where hunters were requested to use non-lead bullets. I still had a supply of 120- and 130-grain flat base X-Bullets, so I set out to work up a sheep load for her hunt.
I tried two different guns, but there didn’t seem to be anything I could do to get better than about a three-inch group at 100 yards. I still had a box of test loads with 120-grain X Bullets from 10 years earlier, along with a load of 120-grain Nosler Ballistic Tips I’d shoot every once in a while to prove to myself that the guns really would shoot groups measuring less than an inch across. For whatever reason, X Bullet accuracy hadn’t always been that great. I experienced large differences in accuracy from box to box.
Nearly ready to give up on X Bullets, I bought a box of 120-grain Triple-Shock X Bullets (TSX) and found sweet loads for both guns. What’s more, I didn’t experience the box-to-box variability I’d seen in the past. I’ve been able to work up acceptable TSX or TTSX loads with every gun I’ve tried them in.
Kati killed a very nice sheep that year. We were happy to comply with the no-lead restrictions during our hunt. Thank you for a non-lead bullet that’s both accurate and extremely effective.
