Just before I shot my moose, I asked my husband Mike, “Should I take a lung shot or a neck shot?”

He said, “Shoot it behind the ear.”

My bullet went in just behind one ear and came out just behind the other ear. No wasted meat on this one! The bull was a spike, so was probably about the right age to call it my “teenage moose” (because things went in one ear and out the other–just a little humor here.)

I shoot the moose near Sterling, Alaska. The evening light was fading, and as I pulled the trigger I thought, “Oh shoot! Now I’m going to have to chase it in the dark” That wasn’t necessary, because the animal dropped instantly without taking a single step!

I was using my Ruger M77 Mark II .308 compact (perfect for my short arms), and was shooting a Barnes 165-grain MRX BT my husband reloads for me.

Usually I help out when others get a moose. Now that my husband is handicapped and can’t go out to get one, I decided to buy a moose tag for myself this year. So I finally got to call someone else to come and help me! And oh, does my moose eat well!

Thank you for the opportunity to share this experience with you.
