Leaders in ballistic innovation since 1986

Leaders in ballistic innovation since 1986

Pioneers of the first all-copper bullet

Owned and operated in Utah, USA

Top choice for big game hunters worldwide

Our story

Driven by our first-hand experience and knowledge, we understand how each advancement delivers you downrange success.

Fred Barnes, founder of Barnes Bullets, began selling bullets out of his basement workshop in Bayfield, CO in 1932. Randy and Coni Brooks purchased the company in 1974 and moved the business to American Fork, Utah.

Fred Barnes stayed on to consult with the couple for several months. Randy and Coni were young in their careers, but what they lacked in experience, they made up with grit and determination. Both passionate hunters, their love of the sport gave them the firsthand experience and knowledge to push Barnes Bullets to success.

In the fall of 1985 while hunting brown bears in Alaska, Randy conceived the idea of an expanding all-copper bullet. Coni was skeptical at the idea of doing away with lead, but after a few successful hunts with Randy’s prototypes, they knew they were on to something that would raise the bar for bullet performance.

Their prototype became the world-renowned X Bullet® and changed the way hunters viewed bullet construction and terminal performance.

In 1989, Barnes launched the X Bullet and became the leader in bullet innovation, forging a reputation for epic knockdowns and devastating on-game performance. Today, Barnes products are highly trusted and respected among hunters and shooters worldwide.

Evolution of the X Bullet

5 generations later and the X Bullet continues to be up to the challenge, whether you’re looking down the barrel at the most formidable big game or your next deer tag.

Evolution of the X Bullet

5 generations later and the X Bullet continues to be up to the challenge, whether you’re looking down the barrel at the most formidable big game or your next deer tag.

1989
The X bullet

Featured a dry film lubricating coating designed to decrease fouling and improve velocity and accuracy.

1997
The XLC bullet

Barnes introduces XLC (X Lubricating Coating) coated X Bullets as reloading components.

2003
The TSX Bullet

Incorporated horizontal grooves along the circumference of the bullet, which eliminated the need for dry lubricating film. These grooves also provided a place for copper displaced by the rifling to resettle.

2008
The TTSX Bullet

Added a blue polymer tip to the proven X Bullet equation. This tip raised the ballistic coefficient for improved flight characteristics and acted as a wedge to promote full expansion and energy transfer.

2011
The lrx bullet

Designed for consistent terminal results at close and long range, with a bullet shape and configuration optimized for each caliber.
